Position Title: Reentry Peer Support Specialist
Salary: $18.50/hour, Contract
Main Point of Contact: Program Manager
Location: Supporting individuals in our service area (primarily, Orange County, NC)
Position Summary
Wounded Healers is seeking a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) to provide reentry-focused support to justice-involved individuals transitioning back into the community. Using personal lived experience with incarceration, recovery, and reintegration, the Reentry Peer Support Specialist will mentor, guide, and connect participants to resources that promote stability, wellness, and long-term success.
This role focuses on empowerment, advocacy, and skill-building, helping participants overcome barriers to housing, employment, education, and healthy community living.
Key Responsibilities
1. Peer Mentoring
- Provide one-on-one support to justice-involved individuals, building trusting relationships rooted in mutual respect and shared experience.
- Assist participants in setting self-identified reentry and recovery goals and developing actionable plans.
- Encourage motivation and resilience during challenges related to housing, employment, family reunification, and community adjustment.
2. Resource Navigation
- Connect participants to community resources, including housing, job training, educational programs, treatment providers, and recovery supports.
- Partner with local agencies, reentry programs, and community-based organizations to strengthen beneficiary support networks.
- Foster a safe and inclusive group environment where participants can share, learn, and build community connections.
3. Advocacy
- Advocate on behalf of participants when navigating legal, medical, and social service systems.
- Promote personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and empowerment throughout the reentry process.
4. Documentation
- Document services provided in alignment with Wounded Healers and NC Medicaid Certified Peer Support Specialist requirements.
- Coordinate services based on each participant’s reentry goal plan.
- Participate in supervision with the Program Supervisor to ensure quality service delivery and professional growth.
5. Other duties as needed
Qualifications
- Must be age 18+
- Must be a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) in North Carolina (required).
- Must have lived experience with incarceration, community reentry, and/or recovery from mental health or substance use challenges.
- Knowledge of local community resources and reentry support services preferred.
- Strong communication, organization, mentoring, and advocacy skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
- Must comply with the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics and Wounded Healers’ policies.
- Must possess basic computer proficiency skills
- Must have personal transportation in order to perform job activities
- Willing to complete a background check.
Work Schedule
- Part-time based on participant needs (up to 10 hours per week), which may include evenings and weekends.
